Amark, How did you hear about this company and do you use them or have considered using them. The price seems about right, but will this be just another price slashing fest. Right now this is the best lead I've had in a while, it's aleast worth checking into.

I was told about it though the National Tooling and Machining Association. I have no prior knowledge so I am unable to really comment of where it is legit or worth the out lay. I just know that we have all been talking about some kind of forum that pricing was based on a percentage rather that a set non-refundable price.

It looks better than anything else I have seen. It is a side benefit to being a member of the Association.

I am really considering signing up with the association just for the legislative inputs. I think we are in real trouble if we don't do something.

If anyone has any knowledge of any of this please let us know. :)

Yes, if anyone has the in's of this site, let me know, maybe if worth while, a couple companies can get together and piggy-back it to see what it's about, just in case it doesn't work out.

MFG Is it good

I used them several years back and got a couple of jobs. The jobs continued for a couple of years but was not worth keeping. I can honestly say that I did not make enough money to pay for there services. Anyone out there looking for a Quality Machine Shop?

Well, I'm going to try it out. To me it's worth a shot, but do your own home work. I checked out their web site but couldn't register with them. They are doing a trial run on some new software, after that I should be able to.

Rip off - I used them had about 50 quotes and was told by client check list on why i did not get the bid - i was to low and all work was in my region to - also was told by one of there buyers that it may take 2 years to get good leads in even though I was told that the phone would be ringing off the hook with paying clients - so i cut them off and they got their lawyers involved and THEY told that ALL sales reps lie and i should of had a lawyer talk to my sales rep- both mfg and first index looks great and they have some great people but i think the buyers of "our" parts were fishing - When work gets slow for me and that is an understatement first index always looks so nice but i have to pinch my fingure in my vise to wake up

hope this helps

Has anyone out there successfully ended a year commitment with MFG ? I get the same BS from customers, too high, too low, well we are just try to gather data only !!! What, on mine dime, i don't think so ! Any one that has gotten out of this legaly and would like to pass along the how to book, would be much appreciated by myself and probably many others out there, i have quoted over 300 jobs in the last 5 months on there and got only one, Yeh ! as you were wondering ! I lost money to get it !! (Material Only) ANY HELP OUT THERE !!!!!!!!

Still can't register with Source Authority, but have been researching NTMA which they list as a partner. Here's what one emailed me about the NTMA.

"We have been members of NTMA for several years, and highly value our membership.

We have a great group of leaders in our region that put together monthly meetings. The meeting is always hosted by an NTMA member in their shop. There is usually a catered dinner (BBQ or something easy) and a guest speaker. Last month one of our congressman did a small town hall meeting. Other speakers have included economists, national NTMA leaders, other business owners, etc. The topics are usually relevant to what is affecting all of us at that moment. This is a great opportunity for us to see how others are running their businesses in our area between how they set up shop, to actually seeing their operation.

NTMA also provides great discounts in several areas. We just got a huge break on workman’s comp insurance by going with Texas Mutual who has teamed up with NTMA. We just can’t find that value anywhere else. Other discounts include shipping, products, etc.

The training/conferences are also excellent. We believe this is a great professional network that keeps us informed and ahead of the pack. "

Save your money on Source Authority. I signed on w/ them about 3 years ago. I got one job, a 316 sst hex part. When I got to PO the customer had requirements that parts had to be cleaned in a certain cleaner. Had to be shipped in certain size boxes w/ at least 2"
padding between parts and box. I said the RFQ did not spell all of this out, to bad they replied. I washed parts(in clear water), boxed as per our spec and shipped. Never heard back. Source Authority sends me something to quote about once a month, and it is always a s*** part w/ no qty.

GSA list

Please excuse me If I sound dumb, but this is my first time ever posting on here. Has anyone every been contacted by GSA? I received a phone call this week guaranteeing hundreds of thousands of dollars in work by getting on the GSA government listings. Its costs $6500 and is supposed to be just some awesome thing to boost your business into the world of government contracting.

Don't go there, you can get into that source much cheaper. If you want to work thru the gov process and work for them, it costs 0. You have to get a Dunns number, and do some registration work, etc. The state has people paid by the gov to help you get goin along those lines, if you are really interested. I can round up some of the info later on today and post it, if you want.

I did some over flow work for a guy who did government contract machining, he said it has been flooded with newbies whose other source of work dried up.
He said he rarely wins jobs now bidding 1/2 the shop rate he was 2 years ago.
Also almost everything requires extra processes. Everything he did needed either plating or painting, and 2 identification stamps and individual packaging.
It seemed quite a pain in the butt for jobs that you were lucky to make $20 an hour on. It is not the gravy train everyone thinks it is. The guy dropped his shop rate to $25 an hour and was spending 20-40 hours a week bidding jobs
just to get 40 hours a week of work, he said he got 1 job for every 100 he bid.
Also there is no preference to previous winners of work, everything goes to the lowest bidder. Buying stamping kits, and special paint gets pricey, and there isn't enough money in the jobs to outsource those operations.

I dumped MFG when I received an e-mail from a company in India that wanted a copy of my prints so they could quote on the job with out signing up and paying the fee. I was a supplier not a buyer and this E-mail was sent to me by accident. I notified MFG of this violation and they never did anything about it. So you, who belong are competing against companies that can hack the system and place bids with companies with out paying the sign up fee.

I have a buddy that owns a shop and is going through the process of getting certified for some kind of status with an end result of being able to quote with "Preference" for those government bids.

He said as soon as he registered on some sites for I am assuming his DUNS number and complimentary things his phone started ringing off the hook with companies that will help you get setup to bid for Gov't work for a "Fee".

Basically he has a "mentor" or something of that nature through the SBA that is helping him out for free and these companies are just looking for a fast buck to help do something that is free.

Beware of people that want to "Help" for a "Fee". Especially when you didn't call them...:)
