Hey guys,

I'm currently machining the attached part out of .125 x .75 303 flat stock.
It looks like production is going to ramp up, so I need to see if there is a better way.

I'm not current on waterjetting / plasma / laser cutting, so I wanted to see what people would be willing to do this for, and what tolerances could be expected.

I have to do machining / fabrication after this stage (roundovers /drilling / depression milled out of the center / bending to final shape), so I need to know if it's even worth subbing out this part of it.

I've attached a jpg of the finished product so you can see what I end up with.

Thanks for your time.

Burt

Question

you don't show a dimension as to how far back the slots go, or what the radius' are.
Can you provide a .dxf of the flat part and what are you looking for in qty's?

Default Look at

Look at stamping the part. Two ways to do it. Get it in flat bar and punch the end. Or stamp the whole part.

Hey Snocat,

Would you prefer a 3d model? If so, tell me what format is best for you.

Thanks,

Burt

Jeff,

Thought about stamping. Any ideas where to get started with die-makers, etc. Never worked in that field before.

Thanks,

Burt

Well they are all over. If you want to send me dwg or dxf I can get you started with some ideas, and if you like I can price out a die for you. We also have a 30 ton press to run the job.

Hey guys,

To make it a little easier I've uploaded a new PDF with more dimensions, as well as the same print in DXF. I have an IGES and Step file available as well, but they don't seem to want to upload. Give me an email address if you want them.

Thanks again.

It looks like would probably be talking about 100 to 1000 per order. Possibly that amount per month to every few months. I guess the real question is what numbers would someone have to make these in to make it worth their while and still justify me not just milling them. At the moment, I'm cutting them off to rough length from bar stock, cutting the open end with a 1/4" endmill, then moving on to final length, rounding over edges, etc.

It may be that I’d have to look at larger orders before it paid off. Like I said, I’m not well versed in the economics of stamping or laser/plasma/waterjet cutting.

I'm assuming that after the die is paid for, stampng is the cheapest per part price, but that the other technologies may be more conducive to smaller runs.
I'm also guessing that laser is the most accurate.

Thanks for taking a look.
