A dxf will work here most of the time. I do see some guys who need to have pdf files. If you can post the two of them. You shouldn't get to many request for anything else.

Dxf or pdf will usually work for a fab shop to make parts from.
But Rapid prototyping is done by a printer (of sorts) that makes plastic (in some cases) parts. These parts are full 3D. These machines use stl files only. Although most places with a rapid proto machine will have design software and be able to work with almost any 3d solid models.
