RFQ SS 40 taper spindle?

Hi all this is my first time posting for a quote. I wanted to get some idea of a price to see if this project is worth effort so just a approx quote is good don't spend much time with it:eek:
It will be a spindle 14" long from 3" round stock that will need to have a 40 taper at one end made form 304. Two bearing setting areas at top and bottom with threads to hold the bearings at the taper end. And a through hole for the draw bar. No other things done to it. Basically the same thing as in post #21: http://cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41200&page=2
You can let me know just the labor cost. No rush on this.

You will need to have the bearing and taper surface hard. Using 304 leaves no choice but to chrome them.
Be about $4g (inner spindle only)

DareBee, The only reason this needs to be stainless is it will have center water feed and be around a lot of water and sand. Im gana be looking around more maybe there is a coating for steel that will hold up in the taper. You mean $4,000, right? Thanks

Yes that is right.

Steel will need to be either hardened or chromed as well.
The fact that it is SS is only a VERY small portion of the cost, just that 304 is not hardenable.

The big cost is the precision required for perfect bearing and toolshank fit as well as being balanced.

Remember you are asking for a custom 1-off part.

OTOH - if it was me. You can buy a FADAL 10k RPM (air/oil) spindle off the shelf for like $4G - THE WHOLE THING READY TO GO.

The only time I make spindles for customers is when it is absolutely necessary. When an off-the-shelf spindle can not be retro-fit. Design and build of a machine spindle is a lot more difficult than face value appears.

PS. I am just using the Fadal spindle as an example that is related to your application.

I take it that this is going into a cartridge.Isn't the draw bar the way water is fed to the tool ?plus usually a soluable oil or other none rusting fluid is used so a higher grade of steel could be used.Could end up stronger and cheaper.
